Our much maligned Lemon debugger is currently undergoing a facelift.  It's unlikely it'll make the Snarl R2.1 deadline but it will be available as a separate download once it's finished.  It now features a much cleaner interface with separate log windows for each registered application.  Check out the work-in-progress screenshots:

After a rather protracted Beta cycle (caused by time pressure on myself; not an excessive number of bugs), R2.1 is now ready for final release.  It will be followed quickly by a new version of the Snarl Kit (which allows easy creation of Snarl notifications from script languages) and a general release of the Snarl Network Bridge (SNB) component.  There will also be some tutorials/source code examples of how to use more advanced features of Snarl (right-click menus, etc.)

Development of Snarl continues apace with a number of significant ideas already being sketched out for the next major release, and a big thank you goes out to everyone for their continued support.

Not Snarl related but I thought people visiting here might be interested in what else is keeping me busy (other than job, family life, CoD4, etc.).

Two key products I have on the go in my k23productions capacity are j:System and Halon.  These have been in development in various guises for many years now but recently (these last 6 months) have really started to take shape.  j:System is aimed at being a one-plugin-fits-all framework; Halon is a RAD (Rapid Application Development) gui toolkit.

I'm going to put some text up shortly, but in the meantime two annotated screenshots showing both in action can be found here.

R2.1 Beta 3 is now available - sorry it's taken so long; Real Life intervened in a big way.

You can find a link to it from our snazzy new Betas Page.  A more permanent link will be added soon.

Although this release should solve a lot of the issues people have been having with earlier versions, please note the following issues (and workarounds):

Installing on Vista: make sure you untick the "Launch Snarl on exit" tickbox in the last page of the installer.  To run Snarl, launch it from the Start Menu instead.

Installing on Windows 7 Beta 1: in some cases you may need to manually register a DLL.  The easiest way to do this is to run the Snarl installer as an Administrator (right-click the setup executable, and select "Run As..." from the menu, enter your admin credentials and then follow in the installer prompts).  Make sure you untick the "Launch Snarl on exit" tickbox as per the Vista notes above.

After a number of requests, plus a moderate amount of deliberation, I've decided to change the licence under which Snarl is released.  This change applies to Snarl itself, the associated API and any sample code included (unless superceded by a different licence documented in the code itself).

The licence I've chosen is commonly known as 'Simplified BSD' which is the BSD licence with the third clause removed.  You can read more (and see the licence itself) here:

Hopefully this will allow Snarl to become even more widespread and integrated into both proprietary and open source applications alike.

This change will take effect from R2.1 Beta 3.

Snarl 2.1 Beta 2 is currently being tested by the dev team (there are quite a few significant improvements to check) and we hope to have this available early in the new year.

Due to the unprecedented interest in the preview release of R2.1 Beta 1, I've decided to make it publicly available even though documentation is still incomplete. You can find it by following the main download link and then selecting the "R2.1 Beta 1" package. Please note that this IS BETA SOFTWARE and therefore will not have been tested and proven as thoroughly as the current release (R2.06).

Snarl 2.1 Public Beta 1 has been released to developers and testers.  There are still some spaces available, so if you'd like an early preview simply reply to this thread.

R2.1 entered internal (alpha, I suppose) testing last week and has since rolled through 3 iterations as bugs were found and feature improvements were raised. It'll soon enter beta testing (so, if you're interested, now's the time to get in touch) and after that I hope to release a Public Beta before we go final.

The list of improvements is long and winding, but here's what pops into my head:

- New API (existing API is still FULLY supported) which should make it easier for high-level languages/systems to access Snarl

- New, better looking, Preferences Panel

- 'EZ Styles' engine which allows for reasonably fancy styles using simple text files

- Network support - specifically, being able to forward notifications, receive incoming notifications and listen for local JSONs

- Support for right-click menus in notifications

- Lots of minor tweaks and improvements

- Better handling and management of 'Snarl Apps' (standalone applications which only talk to Snarl)

In case anyone's thinking development has slowed down, I can confirm that R2.07 is currently being beta tested and significant progress has been made on Prefs Kit 4, of which Snarl will be the first/main user.  As always I'm sure everyone likes to see some pics, so here they are:
